Higgs Throwson Trebuchet
|
|||||||||
The Higgs Throwson trebuchet was built to compete at a competition held at the Higgens Armory in Worcester MA. The name, if it is unclear, is a pun related to the Higgin's Armory's name, the fact that the Higgin's will be closing at the end of 2013, and that trebuchets throw things, and use gravity to do it. Hopefully this reminds you of an important subatomic particle recently shown to be 99.999% likely to exist in Physics. We have built a lot of trebuchets here at Siege-Engine.com, but this is the first attempt to build a machine using more old-school design techniques. Sure, I used modern 2x4 lumber and power tools, but it is all mortise and tenon joints, and the steel was hand-forged at a local blacksmith's shop. The only screws in the machine were used to hold the blacksmithed decorative brackets in place. This trebuchet stands 5' tall at the axle, an 8' arm, and uses dumb-bell weights in the shape of discs with holes in the center which are dropped over posts in the counterweight box. It will operate with as little as 30lbs of counter weight, and does pretty well with 60 to 80 lbs, throwing a 1 lb bean-bag about 100 to 120'.
