In July 2006 I brought the small Hatra Ballista out to my Dad's for some test firing.
I recorded the results which you can compare against Baby Ballista's results.
We stopped firing when it started to rain on us.
We weighed and marked our stones we planned to fire that day on a food scale. My boys thought
this was particularly funny for some reason.
Trevor stands ready to shoot the ballista. I scavenged a stand off a set of halogen lights
and built an adapter for the ballista. It was balanced to sit horizontal, or at a nice 40 degrees
of angle. This stand is much more stable than the one I made for Baby Ballista.
There I am (in the white shirt) downrange waiting for launch.
The small rocks were visible against the trees, but not against the white sky until they got
quite close. If I wasn't within 20 ft of the touchdown the small rock impact zone was lost
and I'd have to make up a number.
The white line stretching down the right side of the picture is the tape measure I use for
measuring distances under 300ft.
A table of the results. Tightened means the bundles were torqued up just before that
shot.
| Tightened | Rock Weight in onces | Distance in feet |
| | 1.6 | 146 |
| | .5 | 183 |
| X | .5 | 216 |
| X | .5 | 210 |
| X | .7 | 244 |
We had to stop because it started raining on us. I think I could have done better given more time.
